چکیده

The Internet is experiencing an exponential growth in users and network traffic. As the Internet grows larger and larger, the performance of the network is subjected to severe performance degrading issues such as congestion in the network, link failures, corruption of packets and reordering of packets. In this thesis, we examine the problem of packet reordering in networks and how reordering of packets degrade the performance of the TCP protocol. We present an analysis on the effects of packet reordering in networks and propose mechanisms to improve the TCP performance in the presence of packet reordering. In the chapter on the effects of packet reordering, we present an analysis on the problem of packet reordering on networks and have presented the results. These results show the poor performance of the existing TCP protocols in the presence of packet reordering. In the chapter on EPDNv1.0 for symmetric routing flows, we propose a mechanism called the Explicit Packet Drop Notification Version 1.0 for networks that follow symmetric routing. The idea of EPDNv1.0 is to inform the sender about dropped packets in the gateway. In the chapter on Reorder Detecting TCP (RD-TCP), we propose a mechanism, which uses the EPDNv1.0 to proactively detect whether a packet has been reordered in the network or not. Based on this detection, the sender

The Solutions for Packet Reordering in TCP over Wireless Networks

Packet Reordering is a phenomenon on the Internet and must be taken into account when considering performance analysis in wireless networks. Due to various characteristics specific to wireless networks, such as signal fading and mobility, packets may be lost due to congestive and noncongestive losses. The noncongestive losses violate the design principles of some traffic control mechanisms in T...

A packet-reordering solution to wireless losses in transmission control protocol

The wireless medium may cause substantial packet losses, rendering Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) inefficient. We propose a cross-layer solution by combining link-layer retransmission techniques and a solution for TCP packet reordering. It is costly to conduct link-layer retransmission with the constraint of orderly packet delivery. We require the link layer to provide reliable packet deli...

Improving the Performance of TCP in the Presence of Packet Reordering

Packet reordering adversely affects the behavior and performance of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), the predominant transport protocol on today's Internet. This shortcoming is becoming a problem of increasing importance, as packet reordering is on the rise on some Internet paths. The issue at the heart of TCP's poor performance in the presence of packet reordering is its inability to d...

Robustness to Packet Reordering in High-speed Networks

In this paper we investigate the impact of packet reordering on the performance of high-speed protocols. Our results show that even small fraction of packet reordering can severely impair the performance of these protocols. We then investigate the benefits of using delayed congestion response (TCP-DCR) with the high-speed protocols. Our results indicate that the benefits in terms of avoiding pe...

TCP-R: A Protocol for Handling Out of Order Packets in Satellite Networks

Studies have shown that packet reordering is common, especially in satellite networks where there are link level retransmissions and multipath routing. Moreover, satellite networks exhibit high corruption rates causing packet losses. Reordering and corruption of packets decrease the TCP performance of a network, mainly because it leads to overestimation of the congestion in the network. We cons...
